A Day in the Life of: Author – Tania Joyce

Today I welcome fellow writing group member, Tania Joyce, to my blog.

Tania writes New Adult and Contemporary Romance, and I can tell you that she writes with a s-s-sizzling heat level!

Tania’s current novel is called Worlds Collide. I’ve read some extracts, and I just love it! Her writing style is both witty, sharp, and funny. I can’t wait to read this book.

Blurb:

Everything changes in Jessica Mason's perfect world when her agency wins the grand opening for Somers Hotel and Nate Somers, the son of a hotel billionaire, sets foot in her office.

Devastated by a moment of unprofessional conduct, Jessica heads out to a country retreat for some reflection where she runs into someone from her past and her hidden burdens are unveiled.

It will take nothing short of a small miracle stop her worlds colliding.

Tania, I’d love to find out more about you and your writing.
Q. Was anyone in your past, or present, life the inspiration for Jessica Mason and Nate Somers?
No – definitely not. My lead character Nate is pure fantasy (and damn he is good!!!)
Q. Is there a little of yourself in Jessica Mason?
I probably share the same anal characteristic of trying to be a perfectionist.
Q. What was the hardest part about writing this novel?
Writing really confronting heart-felt emotions and putting myself in my characters shoes.  When Jessica meets a lover from her past after 20 years and they have to deal with a lot of baggage (hey – we all have it) it was tough.
Q. Which mainstream author would you say your work most closely resembles and why?
My Writers Group think I am like Jennifer St George in my style of writing.  (Fingers crossed – I hope to be published like her one day.)
Q. What do you think reader will enjoy most about your novel?
While the spectacular scenery of Sydney’s Darling Harbour and News South Wales Hunter Valley region is wonderful, it’s the constant tug-of-war Jessica faces in deciding between two men and the dramas she faces.  Plus there are some pretty hot sex scenes throughout the book.  As I said before….Nate is good.
Q. How do balance writing with all of life’s responsibilities? Which ones do you have to juggle?
I work part-time, write part-time and I’m a full-time mum.  Somehow it all works out.  Being a mum always comes first.
Q. What is a typical writing day for you? Do you stick to a regimented pattern of writing so many words per day?
Before I even start writing I usually have the whole book planned out and summarize each scene/chapter. So then once kids are at school/daycare and I have caffeine by my side, I hook in to writing. Once I sit in front of my computer the words just magically flow. I often have to set the alarm to go and pick up the kids because I lose track of time and get lost in my characters.
I don’t stick to a word count per day – I’m more of a go with the flow type person.
Q. Where do you like to write? At your desk, or perhaps wherever looks comfortable at the time?
At my desk overlooking the gardens out the side of my house. It’s beautiful and quiet. Just me and my keyboard!
Q. Is there anyone who stands out as a mentor in your writing career?
No – not really.  My Writers Group is inspirational and keeps me motivated. Being a member of RWA and QWC has also helped me along the way.
Q. What other books are you currently working on?
Too many stories – not enough time.  But on a serious note - presently I am working on “Scandalous”. It’s a fun, sexy novel where a tabloid gossip columnist is in love with her flatmate – a struggling actor.
I’m also reworking my new adult manuscript called “Distractions”
Thanks for visiting today, and for sharing so generously with us. I know you’re anxiously waiting for Worlds Collide to find a home, and when it does, I hope you’ll come back and visit again.
Bio

I was born in Brisbane, Australia. Up until a few years ago my life focused around my career in the corporate world of marketing for several software corporations in the mining, oil and gas industries.  I lived to travel the world, shop and shared many adventures with my husband.  All that changed when he finally convinced me after 10 years of marriage to have children.  What a life changing event that was!  I gave up my full time career to raise my two beautiful boys and, along with the insane hormonal imbalance, I experienced, I unearthed the desire to start writing.

It is amazing how much I love writing - hours disappear without me realizing it and hate having to drag myself away from the keys some days when motherly duties call - especially in the middle of a great scene! I have now been writing books since 2010.

I am a member of:

Extracts:

Distractions - Wiley (Wilhelmina) Cayton's world turns upside down when she meets college newcomer Cameron Wilks. Full of mystery and a painful past, Cameron seems to be nothing but a party boy and a constant distraction. But their families have their futures planned out for them which is destined to keep them apart. As Wiley battles her insecurities and college pranks go horribly wrong - is their love meant to be or just a temporary distraction.

Worlds Collide - Everything changes in Jessica Mason's perfect world when her agency wins the grand opening for Somers Hotel and Nate Somers, the son of a hotel billionaire, sets foot in her office.

Tania, it's been a pleasure having you here. Good luck with your writing!

A Day in the Life of: Author – Sharon Woolich

Today I welcome fellow writing group member, Sharon Woolich, to my blog. Sharon is an Australian author of Young Adult novels, and the first book in her Divine Trinity series – Divine – is to be released in the Winter of 2014 through publishers, Renegade YA.

Sharon, congratulations on your forthcoming release.

I see your novel, Divine, is part of a series. Can you tell me a little about the world you’ve created?

Divine exemplifies extraordinary things happening to ordinary people. As such, the world is one we can all relate to, where folks pin notices on boards and young people hang out to whittle away the summer. There’s a small town mentality, capturing both the positives and negatives of living in a smaller community. As you can possibly imagine, everyone knows everyone and some think they know best.

My main character, Olivia, is new to town and not exactly extroverted, so it’s interesting to learn her complicated first impressions and, as time goes on, how she finds her place in it all.

Geographically, the town at the center of the story – of the fictional variety – sits at the foothills of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. I built the town from research of many different places in that vicinity, taking a piece from here, and a bit from there. Collectively, it’s created a lovely little town by the name of ‘Manor’.

Is there a hidden message in your story and if so what is it?

I’d love to divulge the hidden message, but that would ruin the experience! That’s what makes this series interesting, I think. There’s mystery riddled throughout so much of the plot (and many subplots). The first book will tease you, leaving you satisfied but with many questions. The second will possibly make you think you know where it’s going – I expect quite a few theories from readers (looking forward to this!). The third book will reveal all – but not right until the very end.

What’s great about it is that you learn the pieces of the puzzle as Olivia does. It’s an action-packed journey filled with danger and triumph, love and loss. And that’s about all I can say on the matter. Heh.

Fair enough. :-) Does your main character, Olivia Mae Batkop, have any traits that could be found in yourself?

Perhaps. I mean, they say you should write what you know. We have some similar life experiences and hobbies i.e. soccer. But we’re quite different in other ways. Olivia deals with things differently to me at the same age. She strikes them head-on, and is far more selfless than I could ever be. I like her. Though, as an adult with the benefit of hindsight, I can see how she could handle things better. The book is in first person so of course you, as the reader, are only privy to her internal thoughts. Where she might feel a bit indignant or clueless about something, you might want to shake her and/or give her a talking to. But that’s kind of the point. We’re human, after all. She makes mistakes, and teenagers make mistakes particularly well – at least, I know I did.

What was the hardest part about writing this novel?

As I’m sure you understand, writing a book is a bit like creating a puzzle. You can’t force the pieces to fit; you have to caress them into place. All one thousand of them. It’s painstaking, and greatly satisfying at the same time, just like anything you have to work at to achieve.

Which two mainstream authors would you say your work most closely resembles and why?

This question pops up quite a bit when you’re hunting down a publisher for your book. Honestly, I never quite know how to answer it. Like most people, there are writers I admire, with writing skills and storytelling I aspire to: Neil Gaiman, C.S. Lewis, David Eddings, Daphne Du Maurier, Anne Rice… and countless others. I can’t compare my books to theirs – that would be ridiculous. But one day, with a lot of work and many more stories under my belt, I hope to.

I’m more interested to learn what the readers will compare Divine to, based on how they perceive what I’ve put on the paper. This is the true test of the book, I believe.

Wow. Wasn’t that a convoluted non-answer to your question! Heh.

What do you think readers will enjoy most about your novel?

The journey. The discovery. The mystery. All of the above. Then, of course, there are the characters. You’ll meet a motley bunch of kids that’ll throw caution to the wind, each for their own set of agendas, mostly pure. You’ll root for them, cry for them, and miss them when it’s all over.

How do you balance writing with all of life’s responsibilities? Which ones do you have to juggle?

Gosh, where do I start?! I have three little girls, aged four, two and three months. This should be enough to bring my writing to its knees, right? But wait… there’s more! My husband and I run a very busy motorcycle performance manufacturing company. We sell our products all over the world, which means we have to be available to our customers around the clock, seven days a week, thanks to the mind-bending time differences. It’s exhausting but satisfying. On top of all that, we’re building a house for our little tribe. To be honest though, I’d be bored if I wasn’t so busy. Bring it on! *cries softly to herself in corner*

Is there anyone who stands out as a mentor in your writing career?

Absolutely. The team at Flourish Editing (www.FlourishEditing.com) have helped me immensely. Salome Jones and Tim Dedopulos worked with me to hone my writing skills, which are of course, ever evolving. Salome runs a mentor program. She herself has earned a Master’s degree in writing from universities in both the United States and the United Kingdom, so it’s a very well rounded program comprised of the lessons she’s learned over her many years of study. I’d recommend her to anyone who wanted to improve his or her prose.

What is a typical writing day for you? Do you stick to a regimented pattern of writing so many words per day?

When I’m in the thick of the first draft, it’s all or nothing. I immerse myself in the story, the characters, the twists and turns. I’m completely useless for conversation during this time, unless of course if it’s about the story itself – just ask my husband! It’s as though I have to wrench the story out of my brain and onto the paper in one huge word vomit.

The second draft is a wholly different, and much lengthier, experience. Pleasant, mostly. Though, I labor over word choice – trying out five different variations before returning the first. All writers do this, don’t they? It sounds painful, but I quite enjoy this part of the process.

Where do you like to write? At your desk, or perhaps wherever looks comfortable at the time?

Where I’d like to write and where I actually write are two very different things. Perhaps we should discuss this in these terms: Before New House ‘BNH’ and After New House ‘ANH’. BNH has us in rather cramped quarters. With three little ones to watch over, it means we’re all in the same small space with a lot of noise and giggles and temper tantrums. Meanwhile, ANH will have a breathtaking view of the mountains out the back, the perfume of seawater wafting in at the front, and a number of places I can escape to slip into Olivia’s world while still being in range of the kids. I. CAN’T. WAIT.

Thanks for visiting today, and for sharing so generously with us. Good luck for the release of Divine (Winter 2014), and I’d love to have you come back again when you have the cover art.

Bio
Sharon Woolich

Sharon Woolich discovered the joy of books when her third grade teacher read ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ to the class. The escape and wonder were so addictive, her nose never left the delicately inked pages of every good book she could find after that.

Finally, when it seemed like every good book had been thoroughly devoured – which isn’t true, of course, there are always a ton of good books to be read – Sharon interpreted it to mean it was time to create something to call her own.

She resides by the seaside in Brisbane, Australia, where she juggles her writing with a family business, and being a mom to three beautiful girls.

Blurb

“All of my worldly and unworldly possessions are hereby bequeathed to my only grandchild, Olivia Mae Batkop.”

That’s when it happened, right there. Olivia hadn’t a clue what it meant. Why should she? No one had ever bothered to explain the family secret, not even when it was shoved upon her just weeks after her Grandfather’s death. Turns out, this was the moment an ancient spirit infused inside of her.

A 16-year-old with a troubled past, Olivia’s the kind of girl who doesn’t believe what she can’t see. Imagine her reaction then, when she starts to see the past, the future, all as if it were a dream. If that wasn’t troubling enough, when she begins to involuntarily fling things across a room, it’s enough for her to begin to question her sanity.

As she seeks to uncover the full extent of her unwieldy new talents – let alone her untold family history– they encounter one who could explain Olivia’s inexplicable link to the spirit. Unfortunately, he’s the man who murdered her grandfather, and he’s hell-bent on terminating Olivia next, even if he has to sacrifice the whole town to do it.

She’s not entirely alone, though. Her staunchest ally is a little girl who thinks Olivia’s the bees’ knees. Then there’s the cute boy she’s dating, a second cute boy she wishes she was dating (who, funnily enough, really doesn’t like the first), and an older girl who might just be a psycho... It’s not much of an army, but if Olivia’s going to find a way to unlock her new abilities and save the town – and her own life – she’s going to need all the help she can get.

A day in the life of: Author Kendall Talbot

Today I’m thrilled to have my good friend, and fellow writing group buddy, Kendall Talbot on my blog. Kendall and I belong to a small but productive writing group called YON Beyond. There are only 7 of us, but we meet monthly at either our State Library in Brisbane, or at a local coffee shop. We also meet online once a week and chat, write, and generally catch up.
Kendall’s debut novel, Lost in Kakadu, is being released on August 1st through Escape Publishing, and I can’t wait! I’m also attending a private book launch party, which should be fantastic.

Kendall Talbot

For those of you not from Australia, Kakadu National Park is Australia’s largest park. Situated in the very far north of Australia, in the Northern Territory, it is a rugged, crocodile infested wilderness area, the likes of which is rare to be found anywhere else. I was lucky enough to go on a camping trip through Kakadu many years ago, before it was designated a National Park, and trust me, it is a stunning place.
So, I’d like to introduce you all to Kendall, and hear about her adventurous life, and her marvellous book.
Noelle: How long have you been writing Lost in Kakadu?
Kendall: I started and finished ‘Lost in Kakadu’ during the ‘Year of the Novel’ course at the Queensland Writers Centre in 2008. But it has taken me five years, dozens of re-writes, and a year with a professional editor to get it to where it is now.

Bird's eye view of Kakadu
Noelle: Sounds like a labour of love, but well worth it. What or who inspired you to write about Kakadu?
Kendall: I love a great survival story – ‘Titanic’, ‘Bear Grylls’, ‘I shouldn’t Have Survived’, I also love a good romance. But it was while I was hiking the Milford Trek in New Zealand that the idea formed to have a survival romance set in Australia’s heritage listed Kakadu National Park.
Noelle: What sort of research did you do to bring your story to life?
A young Aboriginal boy eating witchetty grubs.
Kendall: I love hiking in our great Australian bush but I also did some pretty crazy things. I ate witchetty grubs that I dug from my garden, made slingshots with my bras and sat in the bush in the pouring rain. Thankfully I’ve never experienced a plane crash, that scene is pure fiction – though there are plenty of movies that I drew on for inspiration.
Noelle: Okay, well remind me not to come over for dinner when you’re researching! Tell us about the heroine and hero:
Kendall: Abigail was inspired by a previous boss I had who was a complete bitch. I imagined what would be the worst thing I could do to her. And crashing her into rugged Australian bush without any luxuries was the answer. But then I wanted to make her suffer more so I made her survive the crash with a complete stranger. Someone she’d never associate with…are you ready…a bisexual man (gasp). During the course of the book, Abigail learns more about herself than she did in her whole life. It’s beautiful to follow her transformation.
Mackenzie on the other hand is a true hero. He’s deliciously handsome, has an Adonis body, eyes the colour of molten honey and cooks a mean snake kebab.  His life has been a rollercoaster of tragedy and triumph. Mackenzie is unashamed of being bisexual and during the course of the book, he teaches Abigail what love really means.
Together Abigail and Mackenzie must learn to survive in an environment that’s as beautiful as it is brutal - if they don’t kill each other first.

A salt water croc in Kakadu
Noelle: I wonder if your former boss will ever read this book and say, hey, that’s me! J Have you written any other books? Are they also set in the rugged bush?
Kendall: I have a couple of works in progress. Treasured Love is the next book I hope to have published. It’s a modern day treasure hunt with a 700 year old mystery, an evil priest, and a dash of romance. It takes you on a journey from the stunning beaches of Australia, to historical Tuscany and into the exotic waters of the Greek Islands. It’s a fabulous ride and was loads of fun to write.
Noelle: What tips would you have for aspiring authors who feel passionate about the stories they write:
Kendall: Firstly - if your story isn’t written down then just write the next 250 words. And then the next. Gradually it will come together. Everyone has time for 250 words. Each day you’ll find yourself thinking of the next section, so when you do have time, you will produce it with ease.
Secondly - Set yourself milestones and go for them. Whether it’s finishing the novel, researching it, submitting it to publishers or planning a complete series. Write your goals down and stay focused on them.
Thirdly – Surround yourself with writing help. Build a network of writing buddies, join writing organisations such as the Queensland Writers Centre and Romance Writers Australia, or hire an expert. My book would never be where it is without all of these, especially my editor. Oh and never stop learning your craft, join courses, read what your favourite authors have to say, and subscribe to writing magazines or websites.
Finally – believe in yourself…if you LOVE your story then the chances are someone else will too.
Noelle: Kendall, thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us about your forthcoming book. I can’t wait to get my hands on it on release day – 1st August. Where can readers get a hold of it?
Kendall: It will be out on Amazon and all good online booksellers. Best ideas is to visit the Escape Publishing website.

Noelle: And finally, where can readers connect with you?

End of a journey – start of a new one

For the last few months, I have travelled down a pathway that has been quite difficult. Ill health besieged me, and stifled my ability to write or edit. However, today 1st November, is the start of NaNoWriMo – the national novel writing month. As I did last year, I will join over 300,000 other writers around the world for a collaborative, supportive, nurturing, and wonderful feast of creativity.

Over the last few months, I have witnessed the best and the worst of human behaviour. I have endured disappointment, betrayal, and felt the sharp sting of injustice. Today I am going to try to turn the corner and once again breath fresh air, see the silver lining, and enjoy my life.

Good luck to all my NaNoWriMo buddies, and also my writing group – YON Beyond – members who are also participating.
