A short excerpt from Let Angels Fly

“Hey, Mom. Are you OK? You look terrible.”

Abbie looked at her daughter and took a deep breath. “Yeah, sure. I’m fine.” Annoyed, Abbie heard the shake in her voice. Just then, her knees buckled and the floodgates opened. Cassie grabbed for her and forced her to sit on a chair, cradling her mother’s head with one hand while holding the baby with the other.

“It’s OK, Mom. It’s OK.”

Abbie cried for ages. Cassie took Abbie by the hand, leading her out to the shady back porch. Sitting side by side on the swing seat, they held hands as Abbie told her daughter she had, by some miracle, fallen in love. And now it was over—as fast as it had started.

“You must think I’m such a fool. I should know better at my age.”

“Age has nothing to do with it. You’re a woman. You found love.” Cassie’s voice was gentle. “I just wish there was something I could do, Mom.”

  1. Yay! Nice extract Noelle. You know tho when I started reading it, I thought it was the day after your book launch and you really were looking terrible! But that's ok, I can put the aspirins away. xx

    1. ha ha. Thanks Shehanne. I was participating in a blog hop. I should have put some sort of explanation before the required excerpt. But thanks for worrying about me. ;-)

  2. My subjective feeling is that we all should do longer snippets. One way to communicate is to summarize your story in a pithy way up front of the snippet, something to guide the reader into what is about to befall. That said, a nice bit of writing.

    1. I totally agree John. I should have had the common sense to put a little prelude in there before I got stuck into it. And it's hard to get an interesting scene in 12 lines. Thanks so much for stopping by. I'll do better next time. :-)

    2. I think you did a fine job of giving readers a glimpse of the characters in your book in a short excerpt. It would have been nice to have some sort of intro about the story and an explanation/mention of the Boomer Lit Friday blog hop with a link, though.

    3. Hi Shelley. Thanks so much for the opportunity to let people meet my characters. Yes, my novice status shone through. I should have researched older Boomer Lit Friday blogs before I posted, but I was just focussing on not doing more than 10 - 12 lines. Oh well. If I get the chance to be on the blog again, I'll make sure I set it up better. :-) But I met some lovely people through the Boomer Lit Friday Blog and read some extraordinary excerpts, so I'm really glad to have entered. Thanks and cheers, Noelle.

  8. Thanks Sandy. Yes, my character, Abbie, is blessed with a strong relationship with her daughter. It makes it so much easier for a second chance at love if the children are supportive.

Really appreciate your comment. Thanks. :-)

    cheers
